My Reviews
I liked this book quite a bit. I had read Sing Unburied Sing as part of the NPR/NY Times Book club. Other readers recommended this book and said it was better than the first book. Even though the book dealt with poverty and a family with challenges, I felt it was hopeful, because it approached the family as the glue that held everyone together.
Not all members of the group like the book as well as I did. They felt it was dark and disturbing.
Everybody at our book club who read this book loved it. It was amazing that a first time writer could write such a masterful book. A couple of us originally wondered if the main character had high functioning Autism. As we read, however, it became very apparent that her upbringing contributed to her unusual behavior. A couple of us thought that there might still be some Autism present. The other remarkable part of this book was how it spoke to the power of community and friendship! Good suggestion, Wendi!
Jennifer Egan will be in Fort Collins in November for Fort Collins Reads. We discussed which of her books we might read and decided on The Keep—one of her earlier novels. We think she’ll probably speak about her newest novel, Manhattan Beach. Carol read it and recommends it!
Three members of the book rated it a 4 out of 5 and two members rated it a 3 out of 5. Unbeknownst to many of us, the author originally wrote a different ending, but on the advice of her editor, she rewrote the ending. Betty shared the original ending with us, and all of us agreed that the second ending was best! Tammy encouraged people to listen to the original ending of the book as she felt it was very well done. She really liked the different accents of the characters. Another thing we noted was the use of four different narrative voices.
