Brilliant First Book

Beautifully written and translated that describes despair with some hope. It's a bleak coming of age story of a French gay male that ended with some hope.along with new challenges. I look forward to reading the author's next book.

Greenwich Village to Harlem in the late 1950s

"Another Country" describes characters interacting primarily in NYC's Greenwich Village in the late 1950s. The characters pursue their art - jazz musicians, singers and writers in a City that had not yet gentrified. The book boldly tackles biracial couples, bisexuality, mental illness, alcoholism, extramarital affairs & spousal abuse. The title "Another Country" appears to have multiple meanings including the author's and a character's years living in France, and perhaps more importantly racism in the US portrayed by the different experiences of the African American and White characters, and these 2 "countries" have remained apart 60 years later. Many serious issues are discussed without much hope for improvement.
