My Reviews

The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel by Diane Setterfield

Dramatic, Interesting, Dark
It's about a writer's (Vida Winters) past life when she was young

It was great. It was actually my 2nd time reading this book, and I actually found it more enjoyable the 2nd time through. It didn't matter at all that I knew the ending... It was fun to see the clues that I had missed the first time I read the book.

Adventurous, Slow, Confusing
A group of people, running around in the freezing Canadian Wilderness, trying to find a murderer.

I didn't like the book, and I think it was because I didn't really like any of the characters. The only characters I liked were either killed or hardly ever talked about. And what I really hated was that the story was never wrapped up... None of the characters were ever "finished"... and the main character, Mrs. Ross turned out to be a total tease and I really ended up not liking her at all.

With Violets by Elizabeth Robards

Two impressionist painters (Manet & Morisot) who supposedly have an affair

I enjoyed this book very much because it was based on mostly truths! I enjoy reading books about the Impressionist painters and this one was very good.

Pointless
An American in the South of France looking back over her life

I won this book for our book club. We hadn't read it yet, but I did and I DO NOT recommend that we read it. It was silly and boring and I was really surprised to get a book like this from this website! Usually the books recommended here are very good. This was like a bad romance novel. I was very disappointed.

Ireland: A Novel by Frank Delaney

Dramatic, Interesting, Adventurous
a mythological/historical journey through Ireland

I liked this book. It is a collection of old Irish stories as told to the main character, Ronan O'Mara. Then there is Ronan's own story. It's a nice book, but not a lot to discuss.

Signora da Vinci by Robin Maxwell

Informative, Interesting, Romantic
This book is a fictional "what-if" about Leonardo's mother.

Our bookclub enjoyed this book. I like historical fiction, and there was much of it in this book. The book was interesting and it made me want to read more about this time period and about Leonardo.

It's an easy, entertaining read... it's not a happy book, but I enjoyed it.
