My Reviews
It is evident that Ms. Abbott did a lot of research and was very careful to be accurate in her account. However, this approach is exactly what makes the book a bit unsatisfying. There is no real protagonist in the book, so it is hard to have much of an opinion on the events or feel vested in the plot.
This book was a very unique coming of age story for a Western reader. Toru is in his last year of high school when his best friend commits suicide. The effect this suicide has on Toru and Naoko, the girlfriend of the deceased boy, drives the story. Despite the fact that I read a translation, the writing was generally smooth and lyrical.
The most contemporary book our club has read. While it isn't a pleasant or easy topic, the writing is excellent (though stream of consciousness) and the narrator is authentic.
Too many undeveloped story lines made this book muddled, at best, and irritating, at worst.
Await Your Reply was a well written, low key thriller with enough twists to keep you guessing almost until the end. I will pick up another book by Dan Chaon.
