My Reviews
Learned more about Truman Capote & his downfall with the swans!
Very descriptive about defecting from North Korea & I loved how they think about us Yankees?. Amazing that such a place in the world still exist!
A great page turner! For a man who never left a hotel and raised a child, it was quite an interesting read.
LOVED, loved, the book! Learned a lot about living off the grid and you felt like you were in Alaska in the bitter cold with all the challenges that went along with it. if you loved reading the Nightingale, you'll love this one too :-)
Great, interesting read but hard to believe that she raised herself at such a young age. The ending was unexpected so worth reading.
Hard to read the abuse she endured by her father and brother but happy that she finally got away from her crazy family.
I have read all of Ronald Balson's books and this one was a good one too! It takes place in the lush land of Northern Ireland including a good murder mystery, history mixed with fiction and you never know what to expect. You'll find the characters very captivating yet complex and believable. You'll learn about the history of the Shankill Butchers from the Belfast area and the Irish culture in general. A great page tuner for other book clubs-- thumbs up
A hard book to get thru but a miraculous story of what Lale and Gita had to go thru at the concentration camp of Auschwitz. You wont ever forget this story of how two people held on to hope and love.
She over-promised investors, terrorized her employees with company intimidation tactics (including boyfriend/henchmen Sunny Balwani, COO) whom she hid their relationship, showed a complete disregard for the well-being of patients , committed highly unethical and immoral acts, well yes, it was all about fame & fortune for her and denies any wrong doing. Till this day, she takes NO responsibility for what she did. Let face it, the technology she promised just didn't work. Reporter John Carreyrou from the WSJ brought us the truth & saved many lives. A shocking, chilling true story of greed and wanting to be the next "Steve Jobs".
Interesting story of what can happen if a virus hit NYC and what procedures would be taken. Loved the characters portrayed, Jack the main character who always stood by his ethics, Vinnie his OCME assistant, Wei Zhao, the billionaire from China, Kang-Dao dedicated servant of over 40 years, his son David Zhao and of course the CRISP/CAS9 technology. Great ending of Kang-Dao and David helping Jack. Also after reading this, I want the Lexus LC 500 coupe!
This was my first book by this author and was expecting more. Kind of far-fetched based on the characters and the main character Masha who went completely overboard with her methods of running the health spa.
What can I say about this book??!! A long book of over 500 pages but so worth reading about the great Irish famine in the mid 1800's. A story of a family who survived and miraculously made it to America. You will be engaged with the characters and the overall history of the Irish Catholics.
A classic romantic novel of love, struggles and heartaches. One of the best novels written and takes you back to a different time where people were proper and acted appropriately.
Scary stuff with big brother watching and how people can be brainwashed through their vile methods.
Khaled Hosseini effectively narrated the characters beautifully of the emotions of living in Afganistan and the struggles of being a women in this country.
3 women, all different stories but the same really. All wanting to feel loved and cared for but seem never to achieve. It starts out slow but as you keep reading, you will understand the comparison. I will never be able to look at Cadbury creme eggs again without a smile--LOL!
Interesting read about the top companies & how it's changing our culture
So glad I read this book. It is a story of family, love, relationships and even your belief in God. It brought back memories for me attending catholic school and the trials & tribulations you endure as a child. You'll love this book and won't be able to put it down.
A book you won’t be able to put down. You’re rooting for Lydia and her son Luca to make it to America!
I read the book outside of my book club as to theories of Koontz predicting COVID-19. Koontz didn't mention or speak of this until Chapter 39, second to the last chapter of the entire book. He wrote that Wuhan-400 was the perfect weapon only affecting human beings and that a Chinese scientist developed the virus at their RDNA labs outside of the city of Wuhan. Well... was it coincidence that now Covid-19 is ravaging the world as we speak? He wrote this in 1981, almost 40 yrs ago, you can be the judge of that but believe this is a work of fiction. He wrote "you can become an infectious carrier only four hours after coming into contact with the virus..... once infected, no one lives more than twenty-four hours".
Wow, what an amazing read! You'll learn much about the art of henna and what is was like in1950's India culture. The author makes you feel like you are in the streets Jaipur, Rajasthan and experiencing the culture. The author is Indian and did research before writing the book.
Have your book club see the replay of Alka Joshi interview from the Syossett Public Library:

Very surprised at the high reviews as this wasn't what I expected. The beginning of the book reminded me of Flowers in the attic and the author's writing was all over the place. No real story line and the ending was abrupt. Would not recommend reading for your book club.
Found the book very similar to American Dirt which my book club already read. A different story line about a Guatemala living in America undocumented deported to his birth of origin and his story of getting back to America.
Loved the book and the three parts Becoming, Becoming Us and Becoming more. M Obama wrote her down to earth approach on her early life, meeting Barack & to going to the White House.
Interesting read on how Deb had to leave Kabul and eventually made it to Mazatlan by finding out this city by a cruise she went on. The author is real in her writing (sometime brutally honest) of her mental illness and how she continues to overcome by finding her "happy place". Would recommend book clubs to read Kabul Beauty School first before reading this one.
The troubled life of FLW and his relationships with the women in his life. He was arrogant, unapologetic and lived the way he thought fit. Even so, very interesting read of his life, women, apprenticeships and those who protected him from the paparazzi and bailed him out. If you're a FLW fan, definitely worth the read and discussion with your book clubs.
Another great historical fiction by Hannah. She once again focused on women characters. At first I thought it was very depressing about her childhood and then her marriage but just wait! Elsa strength, determination to give her kids a better life will move you. It is a moving story about the Great Depression/dust bowls and everything they had to endure.
A slow start but gets interesting as you get into the story line. This story is inspired by true events and the entire time, you're thinking is Grace guilty or innocence by her talks with with Dr. Simon Jordan. Just discovered that this is a 1 series season on Netflix which I plan on watching to compare the book.
Great historical fictional novel of past and present writing about an apothecary and the present day modern women.
Wow- what an incredible story that is memorable of a family's journey of Korean immigrants that migrated to Japan in the early 1900's. They will face challenges, struggles and love. As the novel is divided into three part; Book I- Gohyang/Hometown 1910-1933, Book II - Motherland 1939-1962 and Book III- Pachinko 1962-1989, you'll grow attached to the characters starting with Sunja, the family matriarch all the way to her grandson Solomon.
A continuation of the sequel of the Henna Artist where the focus is now on Malik; (now living in Shimla) Lakshimi protege who is now educated and ready to embark on his career. His journey begins with meeting Nimmi a widow of 2 children who is illiterate and whom he falls in love with. Lakshimi encourages Malik to go back to Japiur and learn a trade where he encounters those of his past. You'll experience India again and the beauty of the country. Alka Joshi just announced that there will be a 3rd book coming out next year :)
A very disturbing read into the dynamics of the Trump family. Mary Trump, Donald Trump's niece describes her grandfather Fred who enabled his abhorrent behavior at a young age and made him the sociopath he is today. Don't recommend reading for your book club as it would be too political,
Very entertaining and a quick read. I loved reading about Fern and her quips to others. Just when you think the story is going one way, it totally changes at the end.. Was a fan of Rocco aka Wally as Fern called him. The ending was abrupt, wish the author would of continued the story but still liked the book.
Very slow start but became engaged 1/2 way thru the book. Hemingwayâ??s writing can be quite belittling towards women in general. In this particular book, Catherine is constantly swooning over Henry and asking for constant approval of their love. Overall I enjoyed reading about WWI in Italy and the characters in his book particularly Rinaldi, the surgeon/roommate and the priest.
As Eva says, Those "who realize that books are magic...will have the brightest lives,", I wish you the very brightest days ahead. Wow oh Wow, one of my favorite books I ever read about WWII! This book is historical fiction at its best of Eva and Remy forging documents to save many Jews to get out of France (many were children). So many facets to this story, present 2005 Eva and 1940 Eva. A book of loss, betrayal and even a love story. I cried at the end for the many losses that Eva experienced and for present Eva in 2005 when she saw the Book of Lost Names, again.
I realize there has been much controversy over this book but whoa, did this book blow me away! Probably one of the most disturbing books I have ever read. This is not for the weak of heart. So gripping, terrifying and full of addiction. It primarily takes place at a rehab center in Minnesota. Want, want, want. Need, need, need.... and James FURY. I will never forgot the horrifying stories of James, Leonard, Miles and especially what happened to Lilly. They will remain with me.
A moving view of an immigrant experience from N. Korea and a complicated relationship between mother and daughter. The book is filled with secrets, shame and language barrier of her mother who has no interest in learning English and her daughter never getting the answers to her past until..... Korean food is mentioned throughout the book and was a very interesting part of the story.
A quick read and read it 2 days. I enjoyed the beginning of the book where she met Owen in New York and eventually married him and moved to N. California. The book focuses on the struggles of her being a stepmom to his teenage daughter. It then gets to be far-fetched with Owen disappearing and not being who he says he is. The ending is not particularly believable when they traveled to Austin to find out the truth and when she made “the deal” with Nicholas.
Wow! What a powerful story told by the author from the 1950's. I read A Gentlemen in Moscow so was familiar with the author. You'll go on an adventure with Professor Abernathe's Compendium of Heroes, Adventures and other Intrepid Travelers for sure! It was supposed to be a journey for Emmett & Billy to California in the Studebaker but they end up 1500 miles in the wrong direction to New York (The entire story is only make up in 9 days in total). Here is a story of mother who vanished, a father who passed away and their journey from the prairies of Nebraska to the BIG city in a boxcar on a train with a wanderer named Ulysses. Emmett & Billy just want to retrieve the car & the money that Duchess stole but they keep getting stuck along the way to make it back to California in time for the 4th of July. A long read but you'll be caught with Woolly, Duchess and Sally (I read the book in 6 days) .....
A slow start and complicated, depressing about the mother and daughters troubled relationships but it all makes sense in the end. The author has you immersed in the horrors of WWII in Leningrad and it's a very captivating read. A happy ending with the relationships with her daughters.
A story that needed to be told. JP Morgan hired a personal librarian, Bella da Costa Greene who helped build and manage his extensive collection. A women who hide her true identity but managed to become one off the most influential women of the 1900's.
Brutal, Powerful and Emotional. Long overdue in reading as been on my TBR list. This book will rock you to the coor. A very telling story based on true facts of the rabbits of Ravensbruck during the holocaust WWII and the horrid, torture that the women endured.I have read many WWII holocaust books but it's still unfathomable that something like this could occurred.
A beautifully written story of Hemingway's first wife and all that she endured to keep them together. Their marriage only lasted 5 years with Hemingway being the most deeply tortured troubled complicated person known.
