My Reviews
A fun, whimsical and irreverent look at the early years AD. Totally enjoyed it.
A peak into a difficult history.
I liked this book. A peak into a slice of life we don’t all get to see. It was hopeful.
So many intertwined lives beautifully explored. Loved this book.
I found then prose lovely and a good sense of place. I was not taken with the characters.
Neat main character with a complex history. Adventurous. I liked it.
Typically dystopian. Simple language. Twisted.
Inspiring heroines. Based on real accounts. Totally enjoyed this book.
I wouldn’t want my 14 yo daughter to read this but maybe an older teen or young adult.
I haven’t read much of pioneering Canadians but this seemed a good entry. The author captured the majesty of the landscape and the terrible hardships suffered by those who came. I couldn’t escape my internal narrative that these would become the oppressors of the Indigenous peoples but this book only touches on the early days where settlers were helped by the Indigenous peoples and learned from them. It’s a good read and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
A quick read. A quirky protagonist and some surprising turns. Good beach read.
Unique story. Suspenseful. Twists and turns. Lots to think about.
This memoir was difficult yet important to read. I felt it was important to bear witness to and become educated on the reality of human trafficking.
Great characters well developed over time. A good mystery. I got a good sense of the place and how it changed over lifetimes. I really liked this book. An original.
The books follows the lives of an extended family tied by 3 brothers. I wanted to read to the end to see how it all turned out.
Worth the read. Despite the list of characters at the beginning I plowed through without referencing. I think planning this as a slow read and taking time to reference would have added. Regardless I enjoyed the book and the peak into the long ago history of humankind.
I’m not a big mystery reader. This book was OK. I didn’t figure out who dunnit till the reveal at the end.
A simple story with enjoyable characters. A light read.
An original story with a slowly unwinding plot. Felt like a good YA read.
Full of insights. Each essay reveals a life experience that has shaped Sarah Polley. Her life path is quite extraordinary and honestly it seems a little miraculous she’s where she is today. I loved this book.
So much to reflect on, this book should be digested slowly. It changed some things about how I exist in this world. Recommended reading for all humans.
I loved travelling away to a different place and time with different customs and rituals. The language was beautiful. The story and characters interesting and loveable. I couldn’t put it down.
This is a thoughtful book that weaves together a story of loss and regret and hope. It is about forgiveness and understanding and familial love.
The stories were fun. I got stuck wondering what was fact and what was hyperbole. My first Sedaris read.
An easy read with an interesting premise. Provokes introspection and gives the reader an entertaining ride.
I really enjoyed reading this tale. I felt transported to a different place visiting lives very different from my own. The characters were complex and the food imagery delicious. I didn’t want it to end.
It seemed to go on and on. At times the number of characters stared to blend and I lost the plot. So much unessential detail. Not my bag.
An original story that gets the reader engaged in the experience of Indigenous families who have endured deep loss and separation. Lots to unpack here on white privilege, mental illness and motherhood. I enjoyed this book. Characters are well developed. Left me wanting more.
I’m not a who dunnit fan but I found this a good read. Interesting relatable characters.
I don’t watch or read horror but I could almost see the future movie unfolding with the authors excellent characters and prose. Totally worth a read. You probably won’t have nightmares.
A winding story of a life well lived told. Beautiful imagery. Surprising moments.
Good characters.
Interesting quirky characters wrapped around a Newsroom. A bit gloomy overall. The professional reviews were excellent. Perhaps some background in writing/journalism would increase enjoyment of this book.
Well developed characters in this adventurous story that spans decades. Beautiful prose. A great read.
Not my cup of tea. Some essays gave me a new look on things but overall it wondered and didn’t capture me.
Tough topic but lightened with a mystery underneath. Good characters. Lots to discuss.
Good summer read. A little dull. Didn’t learn anything new. Not challenging. A few life lessons contained within.
I really enjoyed this journey into the world of European Art. Reading of the artists imperative to create and the deep sadness and joy of the artists life. Great characters. Sometimes unexpected turns.
Complex relationships. A deep dive on the dysfunction of the human condition. Challenging norms. A love story.
As a Mom of a teenager I enjoyed what this book had to offer. A glimpse in to the future of navigating my relationship with my daughter and the partner she chooses. Exciting to consider but also full of potential potholes, hurt and disappointment. The importance of acceptance and letting go of the leadership role. I feel like the book examined all the angles in a way that was entertaining and insightful.
Not brilliant writing or characters. It’s a pretty textbook mystery.
The characters were hard to place. I felt no relationship to them. I read to the end. Mystery solved.
I enjoyed the characters and the intrigue. Knowing on some level this represented history added to the interest. The examination of power and sadness that comes from having it.
