My Reviews
Five years ago this was our book club's second selection. It is one that stays with me still. Gives great insight and helps one understand Hmong culture.
Most of our bookclub enjoyed the book and we all agreed that Heaven Lake was full of surprises.
Most of the book club did not like this book. Here is my review, however.
I am the odd woman out. While I agree that "A Million Little Pieces", was depressing and not always believable, I liked it. It gave me more insight on how truly devastating addiction is. I thought his writing style was interesting and effective. His chopping, repetitive style was very annoying at times. I think he did this intentionally. It made the reader (me) feel agitated as I imagine he felt at the time.
This book offered a lot of ethical questions to ponder and discuss. Really a page turner.
I couldn't put this book down. The group all loved it!
A story filled with lonely and quirky characters, with a surprise at the end. Our book club liked the book, but several members found it a bit slow.
Who has led an extraordinary life. What a great way to get to know our next President. We loved this book.
This is a thought provoking book, that made me question some of my own beliefs on tolerance.
Everyone in our book club liked this book. I personally enjoyed all of the quirky characters. They felt real and likable despite their many imperfections.
I loved this book. I found my self talking about it to anyone who would listen. I am amazed and glad that Gary Paulsen lived to share his adventure with all of us. If you enjoy reading adventure travel journals, I think you will enjoy this book.
Alice is a victim of early on set Alzheimer's Disease. This is her story. I couldn't put the novel down. I am going to recommend it to my book club.
The story is both humorous, sad and touching. Ebenezer Scrooge reminds me of a few staunch republicans that I know. Hopefully they too, will find the true meaning of Christmas. You can't help but, catch the Christmas Spirit when reading "A Christmas Carol".
I couldn't put this book down. It gave me insight to what it feels like to have Alzhiemer's Disease. Highly recommended...should invoke a great discussion next month at our meeting.
Quick read, with a sad subject matter.
Everyone in my book club enjoyed The Help.
Difficult to get started for most in the book group. I found the book full of interesting tidbits about Chicago and the world during the 1890s. The human story about Holmes was dark, but fascinating.
Everyone in our book club thought "The Room" was a page turner. We all really liked it. Despite the dark subject matter, I felt the story was full optimism.
The Babbling Babe's Book club had a lengthy discussion about this book. In the beginning some found it difficult to adjust to Death, as the narrator, but we all ended up enjoying the story. The novel gave insight to the both the plight of the Jewish people and the average German during WWII.
I read this book because Steven King recommended it. I thought it was good, a quick read.
Real page turner! The movie and book were enjoyed by all. Several members have already read the entire trilogoy.
I loved this book and so did the others in my book club. The book didn't cause any controversy, but we still had a lengthy conversation about it. The memoir was honest and at times painful, which shows Cheryl Strayed to be just as brave now as she was when she started her journey 20 years ago. I couldn't put this book and think of it often.
A classic that I really enjoyed. Perfect for a December meeting!
Either you love it or you hate it, but either way it will provoke some good discussion. It was not particularly well written, but I couldn't put it down and read the entire trilogy. I like the next two better than this one.
Gone Girl is a page turner that is full of surprises.
The title captures the story perfectly.
There were some laugh out loud passages in Tina Fey\'s Memoir. Although some of the group felt mediocre about the book we still enjoyed a great discussion full of laughs. We all wrote down a favorite quote from the book and took turns reading them and guessing who\\\'s it was. This was a lot of fun and we laughed a lot! We all especially enjoyed the Mother\\\'s Prayer For Its Daughter, both funny and touching(a few teared up).
This book is thought provoking and powerful. It was our groups 12th annual, weekend away at the lake meeting. We spent more time talking about this book, than we have any other in a very long time. It kept creeping into our conversation the entire weekend. This is a not a happy book, the people living in the slums of India lead often tragic lives, but if you like learning about people around the word this book is a good one. We are so excited, because the author Katherine Boo, is giving a free talk at the University of Minnesota in October and we are going!
I really enjoyed this book. I learned a lot about Anne Morrow Lindbergh and Charles Lindbergh. The characters were deeply flawed, which some in my book club had difficulty seeing past. The biggest question asked during our discussion was, \\\\\\\"Did they really love each other?\\\\\\\" Read it and see what you think.
The subject matter is difficult, but The Round House is beautifully written. Great character development with a likable narrator. We had a in depth discussion.
This is the best novel that I have read in years. I laughed a lot and cried a few times. Highly recommend this book.
