Liked that some of the characters actually existed.
The characters were a sad lot . If you are looking for an uplifting book, this is not it. There were some redeeming parts, but over all it just laid there at the end.
Matthew has such a positive spin on his life with no excuses. I love how he lets you in, but does not dish dirt on anyone. Everything you go through in life is what makes you you - red and yellow lights will turn to green. FYI, the audio is fun because Matthew narrates, however the book has photos and his actual "notes to self".
The background of the characters was interesting and enlightening. Living under such unrest in their countries was something we have not encountered in the U.S.. The love story and dilemma they put themselves in was unconvincing.
This book was well written with interesting characters. The beginning is a little depressing, but is necessary for the story. The historical facts woven into the story felt true. Interesting discussions if you read this for your book club
