My Reviews

The Mothers: A Novel by Brit Bennett

Brilliant, Graphic, Poorly Written

How is this novel about black women and how is it not?

What is the book saying about the way that people use the church and religion in their lives?

Do you think the chorus positively added to the novel? Do you think the book would have been fine without it?

Why do you think the author never named why Nadia’s mother killed herself?

It’s apparent that all the characters have mommy issues. Have you come across any media or piece of literature that explores this theme? Do you feel that theme was sufficiently explored?

Do you think the relationship between Nadia and her dad would have panned out differently if Nadia were a boy? If yes, how so?

Luke’s mom, the only living and present biological mother in the book who interestingly mothers a son. What did you think of her character? How do you think she would have mothered a daughter differently?

Nadia constantly has thoughts that she ruined her mothers life but we don’t ever really hear this coming from her mother. Is this just a manifestation of Nadia’s grief and uncertainty about her suicide or do you think her mother actually felt Nadia ruined her life?

Is it believable that Luke never found anyone after Nadia before Aubrey?

Why didn’t Nadia, who seemed to be searching for a mother or approval from Luke’s mom, not find a female mentor in college?

Who do The Mothers symbolize?

How did you interpret the last line in the book?
