My Reviews
When the outcast overcome rejection and become the heroes—this story not only lifts the readers’ spirit of survival, it challenges anyone who may be prone to pity parties to re-evaluate their perspective.
This book was Michelle Obama’s opportunity to reveal her truth with her voice and she absolutely delivered. She is undoubtedly a woman worthy of respect, she is classy, and she is a role model not only for other women of color but any woman with ambition.
I loved how she didn’t glorify or make excuses for her humble foundations. She simply embraced her childhood. I also loved how she described her marriage and her perception of Barack Obama. They are the real-world Huxtable family I grew up idolizing on tv.
I didn’t rate the book 5 stars because it is not a quick and easy read nor is it particularly captivating. There are a handful of quotable lines, but this book took a long time to read simply because I felt that I needed to give it my undivided attention in order to progress from one page to the next. I never “got lost” in her story.
I recommend the audible version of this book. I think if I had heard her story through her voice over narration I would have been able to appreciate more aspects of what she had to say.
Most of the time, when I read suspense novels, I’ve already got the whole plot with all its twists figured out long before I reach the last page. Not this time. There are no good guys in this story and nothing was predictable. I now feel redeemed, manipulated, betrayed, and victorious—all at the same time.
