My Reviews
We found the book somewhat hard to discuss. All of us had a lot of thoughts and ideas about the book, but we never drew any conclusions. This book may be better for someone to read on their own.
We loved the cocktails....It was fun to follow the travels of Doreen and her husband around the US. Light and fun. A good choice if you club reads a lot of heavy books.
We all enjoyed this book. We took the time we needed for everyone to finish it. We had a great discussion. It kept you hooked and the thoughts and ideas we had were very interesting.
Was very slow. Lacking in a true plot. Was a struggle to get to a point that had some "action". There were some very interesting facts and great descriptions of NYC. The author did give the reader some great visuals.
We all loved this book. Being that we are from New Hampshire, interested in the facts Jodi Picoult referred to and our state laws. Some of us were familiar with the New Hampshire Death Penalty as, we had just studied it in 8th grade. Our discussion was interesting as, we had definite ideas regarding life in prison vs. the death penalty. We also, had ideas as to who/what Shay is/was. None of us were surprised that he tried to protect others.
The SMS Readers really liked this book. A couple of us had read "In the Woods" first and we recommend reading it first. We were able to piece together a few crossovers for the other members w/o giving "In the Woods" away. Tana French's writing style is interesting. Somewhat poetic, but with Irish influence. Lexi and Cassie being so similar was a little far-fetched. We liked the characters and found them to be very needy. But it worked for them on the surface. Daniel was interesting and very controlling. He had a very clever way of choosing his "friends". The dialogue at times was odd. Overall the story was good and kept you hooked. We recommend "The Likeness" It is very enjoyable and a good read. We would read another novel by Tana French.
Awesome. We all thought it was a wonderful book, a great read and worth every one of the 5 stars we gave it. We highly recommend this book to everyone. It is a relatively a quick read, but there was a lot to learn and certainly a lot to think about. We were virtually unaware of the V’el D’hiv. Amazing how this part of history does not play a more significant part in history books.
We all found this book to be somewhat depressing. Once we all figured out that it was short stories and that none of them really connected other than to have Olive in all of them, we settled in and began to enjoy the story. We felt although Olive did not seem to be a happy person, she had a lot of compassion for those who were unstable in their own lives. She did try to help others. As it turned out, this book was one of our best discussions.
This book is not the typical genre we would choose for our club. We found this book to be boring and very predictable. We wanted it to move along, but instead it drug and repeated the same things over and over. There was very little in the story that made us guess or want us to read more.
The Help was a wonderful book. Our book club loved it. The characters were very well described. It was thought provoking and brought back many memories and events to us. It was fun sharing our northern and southern perspectives. The bravery was very powerful and we felt for many of the characters. This book was by far one of our all time favorites. We all recommend it.
