My Reviews

The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides

Boring, Gloomy
The Virgin Suicides was a love/hate book for our club; however, it fostered a lot of discussion.

The Virgin Suicides fostered a lot of discussion among our club. While it was enjoyed by some, others did not enjoy it as much.

Insightful, Informative, Interesting
Fun Summertime Club Pick

My club thought this book was like reading an email or a letter...it was an easy and quick read. Most found the book to be from an interesting perspective, and while we discussed the "unreliable Narrator" with The Virgin Suicides, we found this narrator to be the most "Reliable Narrator." Some of our discussion questions were deeper than usual, but we found the irony of emotion to be a major part of the book for us. In the process, we found out about ourselves and how we relate emotionally. It was interesting to see the perspective of an autistic child, and his descriptions and illustrations were a welcome giggle to the course of the book. Our club enjoyed the book and would recommend to others.

Emma: Not Our Favorite Austen Book

Emma brought out some good discussion among newer members of our group. There is always much to talk about with a Jane Austen novel. The consensus was that Emma wasn't really our favorite Austen novel or character. While we understood the social levels and the general character of the book, we didn't find much in the way of humor as we did with Pride and Prejudice, or get the same warm and fuzzy feeling reading Emma as we did Pride and Prejudice.
All in all, I would recommend the book, but it just wasn't our most favorite Austen novel.
