My Reviews
Timothy Tyson does a masterful job in capturing the readers' interest from the very first sentence. It give everyone who reads it the history and feelings of fear and racial prejudice (on both sides of the aisle) in small town NC in the 1970s. It also provides the reading with a starting point for looking at his or her own racial beliefs if you want to go there. This is truly a mind changing book. Bravo, Tim Tyson.
Having grown up in North Carolina in the 1940s qnd 50s, I could relate to this book in one way and yet in another it was an eye opener. This book gave me new insight as to how our maid, Frances, might have felt. There was never a question of "bathroom rights", but we were very paternalistic, in that, we thought we were "good" to our help. I am ashamed to say, I think Frances made about $12 a week. Of course, there was no thought of health insurance. This was so well written, absolutely brilliant.
