Dark humor pervades many a situation in this multi character driven story. Where each character offers their version of what happened. Perhaps that’s because the Cuban reality is one where truth has for so long been the monopoly of the regime and everyone has to parcel out their stake in that truth to come up and make sense of their reality. The characters were believable and authentic. The story is a modern Cuban tale with provocative twists. These twists allows the author to recreate situations which might seem far fetched but lived and inhabited by the characters succeeds in transmitting the familiar desperation and grit seen in many an islander.
Fantastic, well written, lucid account of actual events. A Latin American perceptive on Guatemala in the aftermath of the 1954 coup. The CIA, Trujillo, assorted shady characters, femme fatales, social and political climbers of every persuasion are thrown together to make history.
