My Reviews
I enjoyed this book. The first third of the book was a little boring being about a young girl reading an opera and living the story of young, distructful, love. The second part of the book was very interesting and you get a greater understanding of beliefs about death and the afterlife of the chinese culture at that time in history. The story tells the history of the wealthy women in one family and thier roll and how they coped with all the crippling restrictions of ancient China and the wars and poets of the time.
Hanging out in a bar as a kid and the angst of a life of confusion was a subject many could relate to I suppose. For myself, having friends with parents with bars and seeing them as alcoholics is not great. Knowing our society is filled with pleanty of alcoholics hanging out in bars is sad. I finished the book but didn't care one way or the other about the characters.
I don't think guys would like this book but it was a fun book about plants and sisters and gardens. Spells and benign witches. Quick easy read.
Everyone enjoyed reading this book. Some had read it years ago and others found it for the first time. I has made some of us go out and look at architecture of churches and appreciate the castle and churches from places in the world we have visited. The story's voice was a little too simplistic to read and that bothered some of us until we got into the rhythm of the book. All in all we liked the characters, the time in history of trying to build the big catherdrals and the story plots around the church and politics of the time. Fun romp through time...
A different type of book. Hard to figure out at first. Once you get into the story and the beloved characters this book about a street, a girl and her friends is a gem. The tragedy of war and the hunger for food and learning makes this a wonderful book for going back to a place and time many of us did not experience until we read this book. The Book Thief echos of Anne Frank but in a different entertaining novel form. Everyone in my book group was glad we read this book.
My book group really enjoyed this book. It was culturally rich and beautifully written. The opera that the story was taken from was a new story to everyone in the book group. The tragedy of a life lost for love and the traditions behind death in ancient china was thought provoking. Great characters and twists in the story. Love is never simple and often misunderstood to tragic ends.
My book club read this book and liked it. They said it wasn't their favorite but that it was interesting. It got better the more you read. Tells of different times and places the book travels. The history of a books life.
I was kept wondering what was going to happen. I kept feeling edgy and that things could go terribly wrong. I learned a lot about southern domestic help in the 1960's in Jackson, Mississippi. I liked that the author was from the location and had first hand experience. The characters were well thought out. I remember those times and I remember the fear we all felt about the south.
