My Reviews
Inspirational Book about how book influence our lives and what one person can do! I encourage you to read this book and form a Pulpwood Queen Book Club and you will have great books and great friends!
Wonderful book that explores the dynamics of two societies, Jamaician and Movie Star, how they come together in an explosion of passion that lasts through time and tears
Michael Lee West has a zany cast of characters to tell a tale of marriage, infidelity, family, childhood and maturing into adulthood. Her call in visit topped her book as she has a fabulous sense of humor. Her other books also have this spark of eccentricity.
At times this book approached the absurb with the eccentricities of various famous walkers through the ages. Characters like Mudman a man who walks with ever changing sculpture on his back. Old Leatherman who walked dressed in leather. Or Capt Barclay who walked one mile for 1000 successive hours.
There were moments when he shared his family with the reader and how growing up walking influenced his life today as a writer.
Overall it was difficult to read through to the end because of the many antedotes loosely woven together.
Denver Moore and Ron Hall are unlikely companions brought together through the goodness of a special lady. That meeting changes the direction of their lives. An inspiring true life story.
A tale woven around the Japanese interment during World War II in the Seattle area. Two youngsters are caught in the era of prejudice and fear. Forces beyond their control separate them and a lifetime later a review of those forces leaves you hoping there will be a reunion in the last chapter
I couldn't wait to read this sequel to Singularity...to find out if David and Sarah continue their romantic involvement...to see what happens with her daughter Maggie...and do Nora and Bobby continue their relationship.. For a mystery this book intergrates daily living into the lifes of crime investigators and their victims. Kathryn takes you inside the head of pop singer Cassidy as she performs on stage while her mind travels to the threats from her stalker...Is he out there in the audience? And why is Sarah interested in the apparent suicide of an oilfield exceutive? How creepy to have the sister relate what can't be explained, just why is the computer coming on at 6 pm - the time of her sisters death?
Great read and our club certainly enjoyed it! We are looking forward to the 3rd in the series Cross Roads which comes out next fall 2010.
Ad Hudler captures the essences of a stay at home caregiver who happens to be a man. The manly approach is a focused, disciplines and goal-oriented. However when Linc Menner meets up with the construction guys remodeling his home, his daughter going through puberty and his wife as CEO of a hospital, gender identification follows.
I easily entered into the world of Leo Hoffman and followed the twists of his life, waiting to turn the page to determine what his choice would be. How often we are confronted with choices in our own lives and although we think we have made the best choice at the time, events transpire that lead us to believe otherwise. And so it happens in Leo's life. From the unexpected death of his foster mother, his gullible participation in a counterfieting scheme to is escape to Shanghai, Leo struggles to maintain honesty in his dealings and love of his wife.
Our book club enjoyed discussing this book with the author personally! She did extensive research to make the book historically accurate. I knew little about this particular part of history and loved her descriptions of events.
We don't value our elderly and leave them alone in nursing homes, depending on someone else to nurture them in their last days. Lorraine is one of those compassionate caregivers who helps the elderly lead a life of dignity and respect. She also conveys that message to her daughter and it becomes her legacy. A beautiful book full of hope and compassion.
Our club read the book and then had the privilege of talking with the author, Joseph Marshall, via SKYPE. His insights into the spiritual life of the Lakota's was inspiring. On a mission to keep the culture alive and vibrant. A very gifted author and teller of stories that keep us connected with our past
Like most lives there are good times and bad times. Lisa See tells these events in a straight forward manner, never glossing over the pain of footbinding and the many consequences that are a result of this tradition in Chinese culture of the 15th century. However she balances the story with the deep friendship and simple joys of life.
Generated great discussion on having Sames and Sworn Sisters, as well as rituals of different cultures.
