My Reviews
Morrison's Beloved is a truly phenomenal book for any group who wants to give themselves a challenge and an opportunity to grow as readers. As someone who grew up in the US, I was taught a sterilized version of our country's history, but Beloved puts names and faces to the facts.
Though a work of fiction, Morrison's nuanced look at the way slavery affected different people is incredibly insightful. It puts the entire matter in perspective. In the beginning, the characters' unwillingness to remember the past is shown through the haziness of the book's event timeline. As the characters revisit the trauma they experienced, the book becomes more linear, easier to read. It's a brilliant take on memory and perspective.
It's a heavier read, but still incredibly worthwhile. Absolutely adored this book.
