My Reviews
The subject matter did not interest me, and depressed me.
The book is well written and researched. The reader gets a view of life in a nursing home and in flash backs to the circus. The themes of kindness and cruelty to animals and humans runs through out the book.
Historical research and detailed characters provide an interesting story of the immigrant New York experience.
Divakaruni writes very well about a different life and a different time in India. Two close friends grow and learn about life.
If you have ever been in a dance class, you will love this book. It's a coming of age story about two girls that complement each other. Flash backs are told by the dance teacher that tell the story of Flamenco. This book is a page turner and has great character development.
Obvious plot, flat characters that didn't change or grow when faced with a challenge. No likeable characters in a dark gloomy setting.
The female characters were not convincing. Stone was left off the hook for what he did due to the brilliance as a surgeon. Everything was wrapped up a little too neatly in the last 100 pages. It could have been edited down to a better smaller book.
I don't like short story formats even if they are strung together. I found it gossipy and boring. It was not of interest.
The author contrasts in alternating chapters the Paris round-up of the Jews with the main characters very busy modern life as a American journalist, wife, and mother married to a French man. The book is an entertaining page turner and informative about a little know or written part of French history during that time period.
