This book is a marvelous mix of memoir and historical fiction. I learned a lot about the political and cultural landscape of 1930s-50s Midwestern America. The era was not kind to women, so underneath all their lace and petticoats, women had to be tough and savvy to survive. I found my own two grandmothers in the character of the protagonist. Reading this novel brought back memories of the stories they told. I highly recommend the book.
