My Reviews
What a novel!! Sweeping in what it encompasses. Enjoy every page!!
What courage! What honesty from this author!
Was expecting to like this, but didn't
ONe of the best books I have ever read.
I doubt there was anything like a "red tent". Even as a plot device, it was ridiculous--a fanciful wish of the author to take a week off every month, I guess. Wouldn't that be nice, but life doesn't work that way!!!
a very different book, but appeals to many types of people. Highly recommend
Hard to describe, this book is so different. Very thought-provoking. Keeps your interest
This book was so interesting--I live in the middle class midwest in America, and it is so hard to fathom what women live like in the rest of the world.
Timeless story. Read the whole set!!! The movie is good, but doesn't does it justice
I really can't belive people are taken in by this stuff!! The only person who this works for is the author--because everyone who buys this book (I borrowed it from the library) contributes to the gold mine. The only reason to read it is to help others see the stupidity of this thinking
Agree with the last several reviews--picked it up because of the original high ratings and hated it. Particularly revolting as it drags on and on.
I really enjoyed this book. Polly, the main character, was a very real person, with some very real problems, but she learns to deal with them in the end. "Grows up" so to speak. A thoughtful book.
A military perspective on the gray areas in politics.
Very bleak, very dull. Maybe would have made a good short story, but not a whole book!!
Interesting weaving of the plot with the well-known Gatsby.
Interesting way of weaving the plot with "Gatsby".
At first I thought this was going to be a sort of "Angry Housewives Eating Bon-Bons" knock-off, but it wasn't. I really liked how this author wove history in this book, and how women changed their own attitudes throughout the women's movement. The friendships were described beautifully.
I was really nauseated by this book. Too obviously sappy. Too obviously trying to play on emotions. What a ridiculous, made-up way to think about heaven. Who wants their life distilled to five relationships? And who decides who these five most important ones are!! Stupid, stupid stupid.
Wonderful writing style. Loved it.
I loved this book. Emotional, but not sappy.
Tells the story of a woman's experience being arrested by the Nazi's for hiding Jews in occupied Holland in World War II. Incredible!
It will take your breath away. Would not recommend reading in public. You will laugh and cry out loud. Characters are well drawn. You love them all.
Enjoyed this, a great fun read.
I am in the medical profession, so I thought this book was particularly good at showing how a medical diagnosis can really affect a family. Interesting character development.
I liked this book, but did not love it. It was too "teen" for my taste. I think that the near-future setting was intriguing, but I was pretty annoyed by the half way point when you knew something was up about Jenna and it was taking her way too long to figure it out.
I can see why teens get sucked into this sort of thing. By the 4th or 5th description of how beautiful Edward is I was "like, I get it!" Don't bother if you are aserious reader. Unfortunately, my book club wanted to read it because it was popular. I will say it kept my interest, but by the end I was pretty revolted by the whole thing.
I loved this book. I learned much about the occupation of Guernsey which I did not know. I really grew to like the literary genre of letters--took a bit to get into it but it was really a wonderful way to tell a story.
I liked this book, and think that the author did a nice job with the characters. It was really mostly about the protagonist's relationship with her mother who is not well and lives in a nursing home. The only complaint was that the love story was too predictable and not believable, and I really did not like the male character. He was too perfect, yet he had been divorced three times, the last time was in the middle of this story! A guy so perfect, why would he be divorced three times? Sounds to me he loses interest too quickly and cant love for the long haul--wanted to scream at Arabelle to get out while she could since he obviously has relational issues. Anyway, it was otherwise a good book.
I couldn't get very far into this book as there was crass language in about every paragraph. I think the author is hiding behind this shock trick to disguise poor writing. Disappointing--it promised to be a good story.
I liked it. Light read
Tolkien is brilliant! I love this book.
Wow. Lewis's insight into human nature is astounding. His creativity in using satire to point out human flaws is awesome. Great discussion.
I will say up front that I am not a "vampire book" person, so this was better than I expected, that is why it got two stars instead of 1. I liked that it gave a "reason" that there are vampires in the first place and a mechanism for their creation, etc, etc. The book was sooooooo darn long, though. It went on and on and on about things that were really irrelevant. So, well written, but I hated the story. Not nearly as stupid as the Twilight series. I suppose there are good themes to talk about at a book club but you could have a much better book than a vampire one to have the same discussion.
Excellently researched. Awesome, compelling story.
Wow. Awful. The characters were horrible people--selfish, stupid. The writing was OK, but I think he was trying to be Hemigway-esque and not succeding very well (writing in short choppy dialogue with no quotation marks). I only finished it to see if there was any redemption at the end. Really, don't read it. I wish I had not.
This book is riveting--and this coming from someone who knows nothing about horses or racing. I loved it! Hillenbrand has done some excellent research, and her writing style will leave you feeling like you were "there". Cheering for Seabiscuit, of course!
