My Reviews
The discussion for this book began as coats came off and continued until coats went back on to leave. We ranked it one of our favorites for discussion in our 10 years together as a club. Three members had even reread the book before the meeting and found new thoughts towards the story line. Needless to say Our Book Club most definitely recommends your reading "The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennon".
When I started this book I thought "oh, how sweet", then as I got into it, the book was so much more. It was an endearing story but packs such a wallop you can never forget it. These were hardships of the war I never suspected and loving books and the written word as I do it was difficult to imagine. Some may find that being told only through letters confusing but I'm a letter writer and loved this style.
Our club voted it as one of the top 5 books we've read together over our 10 years as a group. Do yourself a favor and read this book!
I really enjoyed this book. Somehow I've gotten into English authors and like their use of words and writing style. I did not find it difficult to understand or follow as mentioned in other reviews. I've recommended it to others and have given it as a gift to many reading friends.
If you love the written word this can be scary, what if your books are taken away and illegal to own, let alone read. I can't imagine my life without stacks of books waiting for me. The story written through the eyes of a child make it more compelling.
Wow! I could not put this book down. A unique story line, not the same old thing in different words.
History books don't give any idea in how many ways horror attacked those families forever. This book opened my eyes to other pains they suffered. It was a touching loving story and who knows, somewhere it might have happened.
This book really caused a great discussion at our meeting. Explainations of things taken for granted; just how little the "person" was taken into account for early trial and error medical procedures...and we think we are just numbers now. One of our members has family in the science field and called to ask about HeLa cells and was told "I work with them daily".
Having worked in a funeral home for many years I've met many Ove's. It's hard for the one left behind. That a "pushy" person moved nearby was the best thing for him. Our book club found it very believable and it made for a great discussion.
This was a great book for discussion. All the feelings it evoked and horrors you never could dream of happened to many, makes you appreciate your life as you know it.
Our group found this to be a powerful book. The stamina and will power of those young men not to be denied was truly inspiring. Many of us knew of the win but not all that it took to get them there and to win.
I enjoyed this book because it was about books; the feel of them, the care of them and the idiosyncrasies folks have about their books. It's not a story book it's an "about" book. I've given as gifts to several book friends.
It would be a discussion on how you feel when you read, it's not a page turner story.
