My Reviews

The Senator's Wife by Sue Miller

Boring, Pointless, Unconvincing
portrait of two marriages exposed with all imperfections and two women who unexpectedly change each other's lives

The group gave this book 2 and a half stars. This was the first book we read and it did lend itself to a good discussionalthough the book dragged a bit.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

Dramatic, Romantic, Beautiful
The main character (name never given) marries a brooding man almost twice her agewho holds secrets in his heart. The main character feels she cannot compete against her husband's dead wife.

We rated the book 3 and a half. The lowest score was a 3 and 6 people gave it a four. As we reviewed the book, we showed the Alfred Hitchcock version of Rebecca which was excellent and although it did not mirror the book, it provided a wonderful addition to the discussion.

The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls

Interesting, Inspiring, Dramatic
Jeannette Walls tells the story of her life - growing up in a dysfunctional family

There were some people who doubted the veracity of her writing - whether there was an exaggeration or an attempt to make her life more memorable and interesting read. Others beleived it was a truthful story and felt she captured images in a moving and thoughtful manner.

Interesting read and discussion.

Inspiring, Informative, Insightful
Greg's account of starting schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan

A very mixed review. Most felt the book carrried a wonderful message but was poorly writtena dn surprised it was a best seller except for the mesage of the book. Greg Mortenson is a very admirable persona dn helped us understand the culture of the tribes and people in the areas. There were some that did not liek the book at all and we would reommend this book not to everyone but to those who have a specific interest in the culture. A few said they woudl recommend to everyone. There were some in our club that were unable to get through the book.
Tough reading.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Brilliant, Insightful, Inspiring
A story that examines racism in the 30's and a coming of age story of a young girl. the dynamics of neighborhood and family are intwined. The themes in this book apply today and will tomorrow.

Thei book was a National Endowment of the Arts book this year so a local theater Hartford Stage performed the play (star: Matthew Modine) and it was fabulous. We all read the book and then hd a soup and salad discussion before attedning the production. The production mirrored the film more than the play but it was wonderful.

We highly recommend this book. A true classic!

Riding in Cars with Boys

Our club gave this book 3 and a half stars. Half the club gave the book a four and half the club gave the book three stars. The book was easy to read and interesting but overall the feeling was that Bev did not become a Bad Girl who makes Good. We felt she did not redeem herself and we all left wondering how her son really turned out. We felt he shouldered too much as a son and a young man. We also felt she expected everyone to accept her as she wished but she was very ahrrd on her parents and others who did not conorm to her partying liestyle.

Writing was good and story was interesting.

Slow, Boring
Bella Tuscany

We do not recommend this book for a Book Club. It is slow and we found nothing interesting. If we were traveling to Italy, we may have brought this book wiht us as a companion.

Our group was split. Half really enjoyed it, and about half liked it. We made it a fun eveing with a guided tour walk through a historic cemetary.

This month our club chose a light reading book. it was well received and it was easy enough to read in one or two nights during the hectic holiday season.

The reviews ran across the board although the book lends itself to a good discussion and the ending allows people to come to different conclusions.
