My Reviews
Our book group read the book and, while everyone enjoyed it, it seemed that she wrapped up a very complex and intricate story too quickly at the end. It was almost as if she was tired of working on this book so she just ended it. Still, the book wasn't a difficult read, the story line kept us involved, and it provided some good discussion when we met.
For those in the over-50 crowd who were part of (either directly or on the sidelines) the civil rights era, this book provides a different perspective. Allows us to view that era from the points of view of both housekeepers and those who employed them and the thought processes of each side; and to see how that era changed viewpoints on both sides. Fascinating book!
A very light, easy reading book. Good for discussion about what is/isn't important in life and how we might react in given situations. Makes something positive about a very negative situation.
Many stories weaved into one. Couldn't put it down! Excellently written and the story line was pretty easy to follow
Interesting perspective on how one person turned a tragedy into something positive for both herself and the victim's family--and changed herself along the way. Easy read.
The story within a story. While we learn about Sarah's dilemma we also learn a lot more about WWII and how Jews outside of Germany were treated--who wished them harm and who wanted to help.
This was a somewhat interesting story made boring by the author\'s insistence on explaining every small occurrence in excruciating detail. The story didn\'t really seem to have a purpose to it; and the ending seemed not an ending at all. Don\'t bother.
An interesting storyline, but the plot could have been completed and the major points made in half to 3/4 of the pages. Very \'preachy\' and overly philosophical at the end. A lot of twists and turns. Started off well...should have quit while she was ahead.
Gripping tale fo slavery, slave relationships, and the burning desire for freedom above all. Interesting twist on an historical search. Perhaps a few too many coincidences; but it all made for easy, goo reading.
Not what I usually read, but a very enjoyable book. The basis--being about terminally ill kids--is a big gloomy to start. But the way they end of working things out, working with each other, developing relationships makes it inspiring. But ultimately sad.
