My Reviews
I found this to be a very enjoyable read; lots of great stuff about women and relationships and life's complexities. This was the perfect book for our club to read in the summer...easy to read, yet good discussion points.
The book was a fairly easy read for me, but I know others in our group had a hard time getting through it. The character development seemed a little lacking...the the character's behavior sometimes annoying. It wasn't really "my kind of book" but it did make for a really good discussion due to the content.
Our club really enjoyed this book; it was very different than our regular read. Personally, I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. This book is similar but different - more like a Lord of the Rings - except the plot is easier to follow. Love the creatures, Eragon finding out he's not who he thought, the character development as the story flows. Fun, easier read!
My book club read this in Nov 2008 and we all enjoyed it although admitted that it was somewhat twisted! LOL... I liked that the book flipped back and forth between today and the past. And I liked that the "whole story" unfolded over time; it kept me reading. Overall, a very different book that I'm not sure I would have read if we hadn't picked it for book club.
Our group really enjoyed this book...nice light read for the holidays, yet made you think about life.
Our book club overall enjoyed this book - not like a favorite - but plenty of strangeness, plot twists, and crazy characters that make a great foundation for discussion!
Our book club enjoyed this book tremendously. We also had the opportunity to chat with the author via conference call during our regular book club meeting. I would highly recommend it! Lesley Kagen was fabulous...very friendly, down to earth. She added a lot to our discussion and gave us background on the writing of her book.
The thing I liked most about this book was that it was told from Sally's perspective, a 10 year old girl growing up in 1959. It was unique and captivating and heartbreaking and laugh out loud funny at times. Overall a very enjoyable read!
I felt this was an easy summer read, but a little lacking in the plot line. It sort of rambled on and wasn't really sure what the point was. It was okay, but not Lorna's best. It's a light summer read, but not much there for a discussion with book clubs.
This was a nice refreshing read...great for summer. I don't know that our group had a deep discussion of the book. It was more that it spurred great conversation about how times have changed and women's choices between raising a family and having a career or trying to do both. Several members thought it gave us a unique perspective and peek into how things were during this time period.
Our book club almost all agreed that this was a great read. It was just different...the tale of 4 peoples lives that become intertwined through circumstances...and that they each are better together than they were apart.
I really enjoyed The Help. It was recommended to our book club by another author whose book we had read, and I'm so glad we selected it this year! The entire club really liked it and found it very intriguing...it was one of those books you couldn't put down once you got into it. It really captured the tension at the time and the complexity of "the help" working in the white family's home. I would highly recommend!
Our book club read this at the suggestion of one member's son. We thoroughly enjoyed it and the book sparked great discussion about how the happenings in the book relate to the world today...from the food situation to our school systems. It was a great book to read in December as it's a busy time of year.
I truly enjoyed this book...first of all because it was about a piece of history I knew nothing about...but also because it was beautifully written. I loved how the author told the story from both Sarah's and Julia's viewpoint. The book flowed and I easily moved through the pages, anxious to see how the mystery unfolded. Great read! And it was a great discussion book for our book club!!
Our book club won this book from BookMovement and also had a conference call with the author! The book was long but a fast read. I thought it was interesting and not necessarily something I would have picked up. I enjoyed reading about the lives of the various women and watching the story unfold. Our conversation with the author, Suzan, was awesome - she really seemed enthusiastic to talk with us and hear our honest opinion!
This was a quick read...and while the content was disturbing (what was happening to the main character), it was also insightful and kept you wanting to read more. Would highly recommend to other book clubs. There's a lot of good discussion!
I found this book a quick read and very intriguing. It made for excellent discussion with our book club!
