My Reviews
The book moves slowly until the last third of it. The cause of the lawsuit that goes to appeal is a subject done over many times. The person chosen to be a new supreme court judge is a weak character, which results in a trajic ending. We did not discuss it for very long. Not enough character development to discuss.
The story of Lily is a beautiful one, wrapped around the history of bees and beekeeping. That in itself is worth reading the book for. Our discussion was long as there were so many areas to explore.
The author has greater character development in this book than in his first, The Kite Runner. It is very sad, there is much for Western women to discuss about the women of the Middle east.
There is an element of fantasy in this book with the main character who has visions of the future for freed blacks, and how she is misunderstood by her own people as she talks of what will be waiting for them down the road. It is also a love story, and of the loyalties that existed between some slaves and their owners.
