The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd

Unconvincing, Insightful, Interesting
Jessie returns to childhood island home when mom cuts off her finger, has an affair with a monk and comes to terms with her changing role in her marriage and family.

Pretty good read, although not as good as Secret Life of Bees, which we had just read and discussed. It did provoke a lively discussion of the state of our own marriages!

Informative, Fun, Insightful
One agnostic man with a Jewish heritage's quest to live the life described in the Bible, literally.

He describes many funny anecdotes and interesting experiences in great detail, and in truly entertaining form. However, you still get a sense of doubt and perhaps a little sarcasm due to his lack of faith. However, he does describe some encounters with power and experiences that transcended ordinary living and he could not explain it in "agnostic" terms. For Christians, it is vilifying and empowering. For non-faithful people, it provides a launching point for faith searching to begin.
