My Reviews
The author couldn't decide whether this was a memoir or social commentary. If he had stuck to his own experience, it would have been more compelling. But he quoted studies and statistics, but not in a thorough and convincing way. However, the book sparked a lively discussion at our meeting; we went well beyond our meeting end time. People loved it or hated it: high scores of 8, lows of 3, with not much in between.
The author insulted my intelligence with her vapid dialogue and shallow characters.
I don't particularly care for dystopian novels set in some unspecified future. This one is like many of the others, leaving you with more questions than it answers. Too vague in terms of how they got to this point. I will say that Margaret Atwood's writing is beautifully lyrical, but the topic is uninteresting. And the epilogue, again set in some unspecified future, seemed like a lame way to end the book, as if she ran out of ideas, and this was the best she could come up with.
...a book about nothing.
