My Reviews
Our club does a mixture of fiction and non-fiction. This was one of our non-fiction selections. The book is well written by a widely known and acclaimed physicist, author and radio/tv personality. The book is written at a level where the average lay person can grasp the complex concepts and terminology.
Great food for thought and provoked a lot of discussion in our group.
Well written and very discussable. Science has changed so dramatically in the past several decades. Moral and ethical issues that we are faced with today could not even be fathomed 60 years ago.
Pompous and narcissistic. Great use of vocabulary. Be sure to have a dictionary. Excessive name dropping.
Beautiful descriptions. Very clever book that really doesn't fit any genre. Maybe fantasy. Entertaining and worth a read. Good summer or YA reading.
Nonfiction. Author treks 1100 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail to face her inner strengths and weaknesses and ultimately to set the course for the remainder of her life.
Wonderfully complex and chilling narrative. The story is told during the events of a single dinner attended by two brothers and their wives. Intertwined are their personal lives, children and human foibles. the author is very clever and will play on your sympathies for each character.
This book is very long and so may be off putting to some due to the length. There are graphic sexual descriptions. That being said, the book is very unusual and entertaining. Not science fiction but very much in the magical realism realm. Very discussable.
Not my favorite Ann Patchett. State of Wonder draws out our morals and ethics and questions is one the person you think you are and how well do we really know others.
This is the story of "Babe" Mildred Ella Didrikson Zaharias. Star athlete and performer who paved the way for women amateur and pro athletes. Incredible story of perseverance and drive for perfection. Highlights the difference that one person can make.
Ken Freehill, a professional book reviewer did the review for our club. The review was done in character and costume in reverse (Roosevelt shortly before his death back to Roosevelt as a young man). Very informative and entertaining.
Incredible true story told from the woman's perspective. A slice of history. Very enlightening.
