My Reviews
I’ve read several books by this author, and I always learn something new and inspiring. She develops characters very well. This book didn’t move along as well as usual.
I thought the story was both personal (emotional) and historic. There really was an orphan train involving low income families who were offered money in exchange for allowing their children to be adopted. The organization was corrupt and was all about charging huge sums to wealthy families.
I found the main character ridiculous at the beginning. She made such poor decisions especially about men. But things improved as she got involved with the prayer boxes. Her character became deeper and more believable. Do you agree?
Do you have any more suggestions for discussion?
I’m not finished yet, but the story is gripping and I don’t want to put it down.
It was important to read and very well written, but it was depressing and I didn’t come away inspired. It didn’t seem to have answers.
I was very caught up in the details of her life and was attached to what might happen to her.
I just finished the audiobook version, and I was sorry it was over. Now I intend to read it page to page. The author combined a sensitivity toward women of a previous era with historical facts about how the first dictionary was created. There were some tender relationships which also kept my interest.
Ms Kingsolver has been a favorite of mine for years so I was thrilled to see her new novel. It stands on its own merit but is also interesting as a remake of Dicken’s David Copperfield. The narrator is a young boy who struggles with very difficult circumstances. The novel illustrates how weak our social system is in regard to the needs of children who are poor and vulnerable.

I listened to the audiobook and was captivated by the story and the characters. It helped me to relate person to person with people who are transgender. T recommend it highly.
I admire the author. I suggest this podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wiser-than-me-with-julia-louis-dreyfus/id1678559416?i=1000608323202
