My Reviews
My book club has grown to 15 people and we were all talking at the same time last night. We tried to maintain some organization, but each question we asked spurred an immediate reaction from several people and everyone was talking at once. Though this is a "teen" book, we all loved it and have decided to read the next two in the series for next month, and all go to the movie together. Great story. Great escape from reality read. I would recommend this book to any book club who doesn't take themselves too seriously but enjoys a fun read and likes to discuss the "what if's"
I enjoyed this book on an infomrational level. His story mirrors others I have read that recount visions or visits to heaven. The majority of the book focuses on his returning to life after 90 minutes of having been pronounced dead, and his struggle to find health and meaning for his existence. It did lack some depth to the character development, though the story was good I didn't feel like I really, really got to know Don Piper, just his struggles to become healthy again.
As a club we did find a few things to pull out of this book that were positive. But overall, we found the writer to be a bit self-indulgent. It seems as though part of her answer in each month, to creating happiness had something to do with spending money, and while some of her ideas were good, I personally found her year of happiness project a bit trival.
The main character, Eva, is so unlikeable I almost put this book down. Her use of big words and judgemental tone was a huge turn off to me. But the more I listened to this book on audio, the more I got sucked into the story. And wow, the last quarter of the book was just breathtaking! It broke my heart. I went from truly disliking Eva, to feeling great compassion for her. The twist was worth the read.
