My Reviews

Blue Christmas by Mary Kay Andrews

Fun, Optimistic, Interesting
Light holiday read for fun but not discussion

Dark, Dramatic, Difficult
Difficult subject but great discussion topic

A difficult book for some to read because of the topic. Excellent discussion of Nature vs. Nurture and a parent's roll in their child's persona. Well written. Hang in there through the first several 'letters' then you won't be able to put it down. Even though you know the outcome you want to see what happens. Don't let anyone spoil the book by talking about it before everyone has finished.

Brings Christian history to life

This book provides a wonderful perspective to the life and struggles of the new Christian Church after Christ's death and resurrection. The historical information was well researched and integrated into the story. Very moving.

No happy endings here

The struggles of the women and the class issues in this book make it insightful but not uplifting. It's sad to think that this is the reality today in some cultures.

Oscar Wilde Importance of Being Earnest

Be sure to read a little about Wilde's life before your discussion. That will help provide some context and additional discussion points.

An 'insiders view' to Alzheimer's

I found this book to be very insightful. It provides a look at this awful disease from the patient's point of view. If you or anyone you know is dealing with or knows someone with this disease this is a must read. I think it will help you understand the fear & uncertainty that confusion brings as well as the coping mechanisms that are used. Great discussion book.

Characters interesting but not likeable

Interesting dynamics between the characters but it was difficult to find any one to like (except for perhaps 2 of the minor ones). We had a good discussion about how individuals true character is revealed in difficult times and what decisions are made when survival is at stake.

Coaching for life not just soccer

This book provides an insightful look at how refugees come to to the US and the challenges of integrating and belonging here. The coach, Luna, is an amazing and tough woman who understands what it takes. She also realizes you can't help everyone no matter how hard you try and have to be able to know you're doing the best you can and accept that.
