Very divergent opinions in the group about this one

It's one member's favorite book of all time. Personally, I didn't get it. The rest of us were pretty evenly divided, that's why the rating of 3. It wasn't the best discussion we ever had, we all agreed, though.

What's the big deal about this book?

Most of us in the group (there was one exception) didn't get why this book has won so many awards. We didn't think the writing was all that great and didn't get any new insights from the author about the grieving process or dealing with loss. We felt it was mainly a recitation of what happened without much feeling or insight and that reviewers were really rewarding her body of work and posthumously, her husband. Why the 2 and not 1 rating? Just averaging what our members thought.

White Teeth: A Novel by Zadie Smith

Modern Novel

If you like to think while you read, this one is for you. It certainly gave us a lot to talk about. Great writing that we hadn't seen before, interesting story and characters.

Boring and most of us didn't read the whole thing.

Most of us didn't finish this. We just found it not terribly interesting. The humor wears thin after a while and we all agreed, we kept skipping parts without missing anything. The author seems to try to make this into memoir, but never goes particularly deeply into anything in his life or what he learned by his experiment to make even those aspects worthwhile. Would be a great discussion book -for groups who might enjoy discussing the encyclopedia.

Loved the book and our discussion

We all loved this one and had a really good discussion. Would almost be one of our favorites. Interesting to see who took things more literally than others and why. Really, really good book.

A Royally Good Time

Our group loved this book. We all have dreams, and it really got us discussing what those might be. None of ours included an RV, but we got to share and look at why we haven't done them yet. Food for thought and tons of laughs with this one, washing it all down with delicious martinis.

The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls

Interesting, Inspiring, Dramatic
Interesting story, not much to discuss

While we all enjoyed this book to some extent, there didn't seem to be much to discuss. One quibble we had that contributed to the lack of discussion is that the author didn't include anything about how her terrible growing up affected her as an adult, how she grew, changed or became the successful reporter she is. The book is basically just telling a story, and does so well, but without anything to really sink your teeth into, discussion-wise.

One of the best, bestsellers no one has ever heard of

Not sure why, but none of us had heard of this one, just happened upon on. Very glad we did. Great discussion about a history and time most of us know nothing about. Skip the movie, read the book.
