My Reviews
The book was excellent.
It was too depressing, and the plot was difficult to follow.
loaded with 4-letter expletives and plot wandering off at times as it is peppered with too many characters and extraneous information.
I loved the characters and felt the joy and the sadness. I have never cried so many times over a book. Only negative comment is that perhaps there was too much drawn out details, for instance, building the boat.
A lovely theme of love and friendship, spanning the ages. The main character shows strength and kindness throughout.
Cute book, but doesn't seem suitable for a Book Club read. Kind of an elaboraate Nancy Drew.
A lovely story of love with a hint of mystery. The author used the plait method on the time sequence and setting. It is a little confusing, but the plot was wonderful.
Olive was a difficult character to love. The way the chapters were presented were confusing. It was a study of a community and full of vignettes with characters living in Olive's small town.
she did have her occassional kind moments, which endeared her somewhat.
believable characters, mystery
Poignant story...talk about seeing the other side of the coin! I can remember some of the things from my own life. It really touched me.
As often happens in non-fiction, the author feels she has to include every historic fact that she finds, making the reader try to remember mountains of facts.
The story itself was quite incredible, both what went into building the fair and tracing Holmes' wickedness.
I found it to be impossible to keep up with the number of characters. I appreciate the huge amount of research in the book. The subject was a terrifying one, and it opened my eyes as far as America's ignoring of the crisis going on in Germany.
