My Reviews
As a 60's person I could identify with some of her thoughts and experiences. Some of the characters were fun and interesting. I am glad I read it however it is not a happy story which I think we thought as a book club it would be.
I loved the book, it was very well written. The story was wonderful and I couldn't put it down. However I was the only member of our bookclub that loved it. Some liked it others hated it and couldn't finish it. Members did not like the style i.e. letters going back and forth between people.
Interesting to read about this period of time in this country. A great way to to tell the story of women and what they had to do to survive. It makes you want to quilt with your friends and share the art of story telling. It is important to pay attention to the names in the stories, this can get a bit confusing.
A great read! Very well written, very unusual story. It kept you guessing from the beginning to the very end! It made you want to go back and read some of the gothic novels from the past! Lot's of discussion at the book club meeting.
Very interesting, I never heard or read anything about HeLa cells. It was a great book club choice because we had many issues to discuss. These included; race, ethics, patients rights, research rights, consent and financial gain. The story was a bit confusing at times. It was sometimes difficult to keep everyone straight. I already passed it on to a friend to read.
Excellent story line, wonderful characters, fast reading!
A fun summer read. Keeps you guessing until the end. Some members thought it was a lot like, "Still Alice" and "Left Neglected". I thought the end was kind of a quick wrap-up. Not a book that created a lot of discussion however this book club meeting was also a trip to the movies to see "The Help" which created a lot of discussion and all members thought it was a great movie!!
Excellent! Lot's of discussion at book club meeting. Many members shared stories of their father/grandfather's experiences during WWII.
A good summer read. Not all members had read it so there was not a lot of disucssion. It was fun for me because the location in Maine is where we stay every summer.
The writing format was an interesting way to tell the story of a teenage girls suicide. It created a lot of dicussion in book club members. It really called attention to impact of one persons action that results in a snowball effect for another person. This book was the first "young adult" book for our club. It created a lot of disucssion about how and when teens should be reading this book. Is suicide something parents speak to their children about???
Wonderful, moving, sad, informative!
