THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB by FOWLER KAREN JOY
Club w/minimally developed characters; author is narrator but seldom do we really get to know the characters much less identify with their situation
Light read only.
Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith
Dark, Adventurous, Informative
Debut of Tom Rob Smith; powerfully written novel set in late Stalinist Russia featuring a member of the MGB who sets out to solve a set of gruesome murdersPrompted LOTS of discussion although some of our members could not read the selection due to its graphic and powerful nature. Given a strong 'thumbs up' by those of us who did read it. Smith has obviously done much research. Some wondered why he chose such a subject and why did he make it so gory.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
Insightful, Interesting, Informative
Along with his physical challenges, Junior must make some tough decisions regarding his future. Most readers felt that this young adult novel accurately portrayed a difficult situation where Junior has decided to leave the reservation and 'his people' in order to further his chances of success. Prompted lots of discussion.
