My Reviews
As I live in the southwest and find it breathtakingly beautiful, I was reminded in this book what it took to live here in the 1800's. Eva struggles with her own demons and with the demons of the landscape, so she fails to see the depth of beauty surrounding her. Many people today come to Taos, Santa Fe and surrounding areas to find their way or to find a new way. Eva doesn't escape her past, but finds it deeply embedded in her future. This book is not just a look inside the frontier of New Mexico, but inside a woman who had hoped to find a new frontier.
Gin Phillips took me to the coal mines and hard times of Alabama of the 1930's. Tess may live in physical poverty, but not poverty of the heart and mind. Ms. Phillips' story-telling technique of having each character speak in first person keeps the reader totally engaged. I can't wait to read it again.
