My Reviews
The Reader (Movie Tie-in Edition) (Vintage International) by Bernhard Schlink
Dramatic, Interesting, Insightful
The novelists attempts to come to terms with the realities of the Holocaust in post WWII Germany. The Reader stimulates great discussion for book groups. Some of the issues that surface in discussion include the responsibility of the individual for actions in difficult times; the collective responsibility of a generation for the "sins" of their parents; the role of an older woman in shaping, distorting, corrupting an adolescent; how illiteracy can distort one's world view.
Downtown Owl: A Novel by Chuck Klosterman
Interesting, Insightful, Informative
Downtown Owl recounts the lives of several characters living in a small town in North Dakota during the 1980s. It's a story of small town life in some ways; but it also explores the topic of realityAlthough I was not a great fan of the book, it certainly led to one of our best discussions. Several of us in our book club grew up in small towns and could resonate with the depictions of small town life.
