My Reviews
This book was fun to read and discuss. It made us all want to get our own bus and travel. The descriptions of the places Doreen visited and the people she met and visited were insightful but also full of witty observations. We loved talking to the author on speaker phone and loved going out armed with her martini recipes to enjoy sampling them at a local restaurant.
A serious subject told humorously in the voice of the main character. Wonderful Appalachian setting . Heavy on science since Kingsolver is a biologist and environmentalist but basically quite entertaining.
This was a look at the effects of war on the nurses who treated the wounded and dying. Our group has members from 35 to 80. Our discussion was really interesting since we had members who lived through these times and ones who only knew it as history.
A look at a southern black families culture and lifestyle. I expected more about the storm but got more about dog fighting. The family values were a strong element and in spite of dire circumstances there was a lot of sibling love and support from good friends.good friends. The writer is exceptional in her use of words describing scenes and setting atmosphere.
Beautifully writing about two dark subjects, dog fighting and a hurricane. But through the dark events the love and support of a poor family trying to survive shines through. Their lives are very hard but they have forged loving bonds with friends and families and that's what the story is really about.
This book was a good choice for today's world as America struggles with its immigration policy. Our group was not familiar with the author's tv shows and some were offended by her prison type language. Understanding what the child of deported parents went through helped us understand the hardships imposed but we really didn't like the author or her writing style.
The stories were interesting but seemed more like they belonged in a magazine than a book. There was nothing to really discuss,
