My Reviews
We learned a lot about the famous hela cells and loved the human story that was the background. The scientific jargon was not overwhelming and thankful that the author kept it as clearly explained in as simple terms as possible. Henrietta Lacks' background and her family's journey of discovering her story was so insightful and heartbreaking as well. Wonderful story telling with lots of scientific information and facts deftly interwoven; a must read!
Novel has so many twists and keeps you thoroughly engaged it's hard to put down you want to see what happens next. The main characters Nick and Amy are so well drawn psychologically and their social situations are believable ie. what happens when you lose your well-paying jobs and how it affects them individually and as a couple. I would recommend this heartily!
This is an amazing memoir that reads like a novel about the author's life circumstances interwoven into her adventure solo-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail when she was in her 20's. She describes such an amazing journey starting from the Mojave Desert going all the way through California and Oregon and Washington and motives you to take hikes yourself! And interspersed throughout were titles of books Cheryl had her friend mailed to her in care packages to outposts she planned to stop along the way. I loved that! Gives you more ideas about what other books to pick up and read.
A good read that hooks you and keeps you coming back to see what will happen next. The twist at the end got me I never saw that coming!
Only 1 person in the book club finished it before our meeting. It was difficult to follow with British-type conversations that are hard to figure out. I would not recommend this book for book club.
I haven't picked up a book like this in a long time. It's a lovely story of young Swedish woman who finds love, belonging, and adventure when she visits a friend who lives in a small farming community of Broken Wheel, Iowa. Though the characters seem one-dimensional such as the uptight "church lady" Caroline, or the busybody housewife Jenn, or the town recovering alcoholic George who is helpful and kind underneath it all, the interpersonal relationships and stories gallop along and are highly entertaining. This would be the perfect "beach read" or summer book to take along on vacation. I found it thoroughly enjoyable via Audible.
