My Reviews
I enjoyed the book because I thought the professor handled his "retirement" with grace and dignity while controlling the process, even though it wasn't his choice. It was interesting how they wove the story from present to past which allowed the author to develop the characters as well as the story.
I had a hard time staying awake while reading. The back and forth between Tel Aviv (elevator story) and Africa. I need a book to move faster. I felt like I was watching paint dry.
I loved the way it was written both in the past and the present with each of the main characters lives intersecting in the most bizarre way. I could not put it down. A fast read for those with tight schedules.
I found the book interesting and I wondered what I would have done had I seen my adopted child's face on a "lost child" card. I thought the real mother's fate helped the author complete the book so the readers approved the ending, but I wonder, if in reality, the child would have fared as well.
I enjoyed the book and found the history of the relationship withe the Chinese immigrants extremely interesting. The story between Pearl and May and their extended families was very interesting and kept my attention throughout the novel. It led to much discussion in our book club and I would recommend it to other book clubs.
The book was slow with the character development and at times I wanted to put it down but it was worth finishing. The book did allow for a very good discussion with the book club so that made the book worthwhile. As one member said, this book had good characters who were not all that good and bad characters who were not all that bad.
Enjoyed this book and think women of every age will garner something from the descriptions of life as it relates to the shells of the sea.
It was a predictable book in many ways but did provide for much discussion with the group regarding secrets, revenge and the effects they have on ones life. It was an easy read-great for the beach.
I have to admit that I was reading the book with several grandchildren under foot, but I found it rather confusing with the different characters, time periods and places. It was a good story and it was all brought to an end with a bit of a twist.
I loved the book but was always a bit confused because the names, places and dates changed thru out the book. If you read the book, keep notes on people to keep track.
It was a very descriptive review of the plague with an interesting story surrounding the events. The ending was not plausible for that time and her character development of the minister was not consistent. It did generate a great deal of discussion which was good.
Our book club members are from every age group and all really enjoyed the book. There was more discussion with this book than any other book our club has read.
As typical of Kate Morton, she is extremely long winded in her descriptions. That being said, her writing is very beautiful. She left much on the table as far as story development. While she tied up all the plots and subplots, it was very superficial. She would have done better to have less subplots and develop them more thoroughly.
