My Reviews
I found this book funny because the author's husband has so many similarities to mine. I didn't realize what a 'project nerd' he was. It was light-hearted and showed how a person can really change when they give something a chance.
I enjoyed the book and the stories the friends shared. I often found myself thinking back to my high school days and the special memories I have. I, too, have friends that know me and have memories only we can share. It was a beautiful tribute to friendship.
A dark look at a woman's life in the early 19th century. Submissive behavior, incest, death and more - it's all in there. I really did not like this book.
A close look at indescreet relationships in the early 20th century. I was surprised at how forward the woman was with her feelings for Frank, given the time period. She risks all to be with him, ultimately leaving her husband and children. What an adventurous life the two then led. The ending will have your mouth dropping open! Don't peek and look ahead!
A definite 'must-read!' I had a little trouble with the deep southern slang in the first few chapters, but the characters drew me in quickly. I found myself angry at the white society women and anxious for the black servants. There were times when I couldn't put it down. I kept thinking, "how did they hold their tongues when they were being treated so outwardly awful?!" It is sad to believe that life existed like this for so many good people. It will pull at your heart and teach you a lesson.
Start it and stay with it! By mid-book you will have trouble putting it down! The mystery winds through many characters only to find you completely surprised at the end.
I did not like the writing style. She bounced from topics - sometimes from a serious one, like the section on military funerals, to her children's sports activities.
This book didn't seem to have the organized ideas I found in its previous version. I felt as if it were jumping from the various small plots within it. Having never lived a life such as this, I found it frustrating that she would go back into the turmoil after finding happiness with her husband. The lifestyle brought so much drama into her life by her choice.
What a life to explore! I would find myself stopping at points in the story and thinking 'this is a life someone has lived!' A view of the 'haves' and 'have nots' in society life; I felt so sad for the children and the lack of love from their parents. Yet I was thankful for the nanny and the attention she gave. However, that kindness always came back to her as a negative from her 'employer.' Basically, they make the babies and let someone else nuture them. I wanted to strangle a few of them!
What a beautifully written book about a son looking back on the childhood with his father. He truly admired all his father had done for him and kept the life lessons close to his heart. It was very touching; I highly recommend it!
Having been fascinated with the Kennedy's history, I was excited to read it. I had no idea of the affair the two had had and the extent the Kennedy's went to keep all quiet. It definitely gives a different perspective of the storied lives. A quick read!
