My Reviews
This book reads like a memoir, so is not an action-packed novel, but more of a window into the ruminations of a first lady of humble upbringing who never imagined living a life of prominence. Although the book claims "fiction loosely inspired by the life of an American first lady", its framework is almost completely based on the Bush family. We found it difficult to imagine the characters as anyone but the Bushes and their associates.
Although this was not a page-turner, most of the group thoroughly enjoyed it, and there were plenty of surprising developments to keep the interest of even those who were a little less enthused about the book.
Our group had a lot of great discussion from this book. Our group has a wide age group, so it was interesting seeing the different (and similar) opinions of young vs old. It deals with the issues of how emotions can override logic and also challenges gender biases. Although I enjoyed this book, I found Shreve's writing to be less like her normal style (which I love) and more like Jody Picoult. However, this worked out since I think that Picoult's style is more enjoyable to a wider range of readers than Shreve's. This is an important book for
This book is a quick read that tells a moving story of one girl's struggle to survive the atrocities of the Holocaust. It inspires much conversation about human nature, courage, cowardice and the power of secrets.
I took a long time to get into this book. There was a ton of detail and I thought much of it was unneccessary. A lot of it read like a police report. The story was a great one and you eventually get hooked and don't want to put it down. Some good surprises. Interesting characters and great plot development. I would recommend it.
I think this is an important book to read since so many people know someone who is affected by Alzheimer's. Because it is a disease that affects the mind, sufferers and their families often have a difficult time getting support from those around them. This book will help people to have a better understanding of the disease and, hopefully, help them to be more compassionate.
