My Reviews
After reading, "Life of Bees", I very much anticipated "The Mermaids Chair".What a disappointment that this book was so predictable and plodding. I felt no sympathy or connection with the characters. a
The "Kite Runner" has great staying power. The characters and issues were so compelling and I often pause to wonder what has happened to the charcaters even still. Just wonderful!
explores the ethics and complexities of genetics and social engineering as a younger daughter sues her parents for medical emancipation from being her older sister's donor. Great book for discussion groups. Explores both sides of the issues with heartwrenching story.
discover the true meaning of friendship between women
Fascinating insights into life behind the veil. The cultural chasm is a little hard for westerners to bridge. Sultana reveals shocking truths, but at times her effort to be a postive force or change seems trivial
Everyhting Tsukiyama writes resonates with most most lyrical writing. Fantastic love story
dramatic story written with humor and wonderful detail.
An amazing memoir of a young girl's life with a oompletely disfunctional family and her eeventual escape.
I was astonished to read of Greg Mortenson's courage and humble dedication to change the world by educating children ( and specifically girls) in lands most of us view as hostile to American involvement. An inspiring read.
A humorous and touching account of 4 women who cross paths before, during and after their divorces. "Wife Goes On" speaks to the power of female friendship and the bouyancy of women as they struggle to put their lives back together. Good character development and a theme that every women, divorced or not, can resonate with.
This book will leave you yearning for more. The characters are so real they seem to be sitting in the room whispering their stories. The book sparked an insightful discussion on the lingering remnants of racism in our current day. A superb bookclub selection.
I was taken aback to find myself sobbing out loud as I read Molaka'i. A very poignant story of the residents of a leper colony that will grip your soul and redefine courage.
Teacher and student pair off once again to satisfy their egos as they mentor the world\\\\\\\'s greatest magicians. Hopelessly caught in the clash of their epic egos are their proteges. The Night Circus is the mysterious venue that appears without notice and features the most fantastical spectacles driven by the audience\\\\\\\'s own ability to imagine and believe.
The author does a great job of shedding light on the scruples of the art world and forgeries. Sent many bookclub members straight to google to verify. The author poses some interesting ethical questions regarding the things done in the name of love, trust and awe.
Frankenstein is slow to start, but then grabs your imagination. Nature vs. Nurture? The Ethics of Scientific Study? are great book discussion topics explored by Shelley\\\'s \\\"Frankenstein\\\". So much more than a horror story.
Absolutely shocking that the practice of \\\'race purification\\\' was practiced in America- long after Hitler. Diane Chamberlain does a brilliant job of uncovering one of America\\\'s dirty little secrets- a must read
Always shocked to read books about misguided good intentions. The practice of sending orphaned children to the midwest for random adoption is another of those practices that will make the reader cringe to think this really happened. That the lead character, Molly, could find it so easy to uncover the past with just a few internet searches seemed very unrealistic and after bonding with Molly, readers are left hanging about her future. Too many loose ends.
Chamberlain reveals a shocking period in our time through the eyes of a young, intrepid social worker. Forced sterilization was a practice utilized for 20+ years under the guise of protecting the poor and feeble from the risk of pregnancy. This book will engulf and outrage you.
jody Picoult has a unique ability to educate, shock, and touch her readers. If you haven't read a Picoult book since she explored various teenage issues, then you are in for a treat. Picoult's research regarding elephants and their memories and intelligence is engaging and the storyline of a young girl in search of her missing mother will keep you turning the pages.
Child Abduction. Book moved slowly and was not particularly convincing. I dislike the ploy of adding in characters and events that are useless and unresolved just to through the reader off.
Educated is a riveting story of the author's struggle to obtain an education against the wishes or her survivalist family. Westover's struggle to obtain an education speaks volumes about how easy it is to lose or at least cloister way independent thinking..
A very quick read with engaging characters that provides insight into the immense struggle so many young women ( in particular) face with body image, eating disorders and the need for control. A good mother-daughter read.
