Belong To Me by Marisa De Los Santos

Rich characters, lots of subplots, transforming events. We had a good discussion and a lot of speculation on what would happen next for the characters. I think when an author can get the reader so involved in the characters' lives that you want to know what happens next, that's good characterization!

Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson with David Oliver Relin

Interesting book about Mortenson keeping a promise and building a school in a remote village in Pakistan and later in Afghanistan. Our group admired what he has done, but found Mortenson's behavior irritating. We had a lively discussion about what drives certain people to these heroic acts...

The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman

True story of Jan and Antonina Zabinski who were responsible for saving about 300 Jews in Warsaw, Poland during WW II. Jan was director of the Warsaw Zoo and when the zoo was dismantled, he joined the Polish underground. The story is told through Antonina's diary and it is she who manages to create safe haven for the escaping Jews.

Our group loved the language and Jakob's story. Poignant would be a good descriptor. One member(a family counselor by trade)felt Athos, Jakob, and Ben's parents were accurate portrayals of what today we call Post Traumatic Syndrome.

On Beautyr by Zadia Smith

Our group had mixed feelings about this book. Interesting story, but a bit confusing. One member described the book as 'disorganized', jumping from character to character. Another complained she couldn't fully sympathize or identify with any of the characters. However, overall the book did generate a lively discussion. Sometimes the books you struggle through offer the most for discussion.

Good book. Initially difficult to get caught up in. A good discussion evolved. I think this happens more often when books are difficult and/or challenging. Forcing the reader out of their comfort zone.
