My Reviews
A well written, fun read that pulled you into the lives and experiences of many colorful/interesting and well-developed characters. Although serious in subject (the life altering effects of the German occupation on the people of Guernsey), the authors interject humor, romance, historical fact and more. The story pulls you in. The letter format filled the book with "first-hand account" detail that made the story even more interesting.
The author immediately pulls you in with a tale of mystery that makes the reader eager for more.
We really enjoyed the story of Adie, and especially Tempe's, triumphs through difficult life events. Tempe's optimism and perseverance were inspiring, and J.L. Miles often left you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next chapter's events. However, we all believed that Miles' use of broken dialect in Tempe's journal was degrading, distracting and inconsistent with the description of how Tempe learned to read and write from classic literature.
It was a fun read.
A beautifully written story with well developed characters. I didn't want to put it down and genuinely cared about what happened to the characters. I wanted to hug Aibileen, protect Minny, and slap Hilly :-)
This was a very fun read, with a good story, interesting characters, and intriguing plot twists. An intelligently written novel.
This book is gripping. It took me a little while to become absorbed, but once I got into the story, I was hooked. The characters and story were well-developed. Very interesting perspective from the voice of the 5 year old.
Although the premise has potential, the book falls flat. The writing is poor, the characters are undeveloped and the end just peters out. It is also very repetitive in its description of certain characters and circumstances - guess the author had to stretch the text to meet a minimum page requirement.
Excellent book. The author takes you into another world, another time... characters are well developed, the story is gripping, poignant, romantic. I highly recommend it.
A beautiful story about relationships, love, and the consequences brough about by our choices. This book is so well written. The charachters are wonderful, even is not always likeable and the story builds in lots of suspense as it unfolds.
I found myself trying to describe the book to a friend, but in relaying the premise, felt I fell short of really captureing all of the emotion and feeling that the author builds in. You must read it to really get it.
I enjoyed this book very much. I took it for what it is, an incredible story about an event that occurred in a little boy's life as interpreted by his family. I enjoyed hearing about the boy's visit to Heaven and the beautiful picture that he paints. I also enjoyed the comparisons of those events to scripture and found myself learning a few things I didn't know. I choose to believe because that works for me and because, someday far into the future, I hope to go there too. Beautiful.
This is a nice story with built in suspense as the story unravels. The author take a few convenient liberties with the storyline as it comes together in the end, but overall, I think it was enjoyable. A beautiful message of forgiveness and unconditional love.
This book had some interesting characters and information about the Amish. I liked reading about a subject I know little about. I also liked the book\\\'s optimism, focus on the good in humankind, religious faith and strong family relationships. However, the story was not believable. The author included details and plot lines that were unnecessary, distracting and overly contrived. Her use of italic text to call out text written in Pennsylvania Dutch was a bit annoying.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a great story and so well written. I found it hard to put down. I really enjoyed the focus on the strong protagonist and the fun Manhattan social setting that allowed her character to thrive.
Unlikeable characters, unconvincing story
