My Reviews
Not the best book by Lamb, but certainly used a number of real events to provoke his characters.
It was not what I expected. I thought she'd write about how she got through every day living (young, young family, career woman, with parents) while battling cancer. But it was more about her relationship with her father - and still didn't explore how being in the middle place affected her battle with cancer.
In addition to enjoying the story, I learned so much about WWII history. I have an acquaintance that actually lives on Guernsey and there are so many questions that I have for her. Reading this book has led to a desire for more information.
The first reading was good but not great. Then I read it again, as did some other book club members. All of us found a 'different' read the second time. I really enjoyed the writing style and found additional themes with the second read - and liked the book even more.
factually inaccurate with dates
Took about 150 pages to get into the book. Seemed extremely pointless in the beginning and didn't get much better. Needed to have a dictionary and have read Anna Karenina to really understand this book. There are some gems waiting to be harvested but you have to dig deep and want to. I'm not sure many will want to.
This was more than one book all rolled into a thriller that had me wanting more. And you get more with two follow-on books. The setting in Sweden provided a very unfamiliar setting and the names were difficult. Also lots of people involved. But it made for a great read. Had fun at our book club meeting with dragon tattoos and a menu with a Swedish theme.
You might think this is a bit of fluff but it tackles the subject of domestic abuse and bullying that could happen to anyone.
