My Reviews
Climate change is accepted as a given in this book: ideas for dealing wtih it drive the novel. McEwan describes beautifully. Situations in the book have the reader laughing out loud or cringing. Very, very interesting novel.
I think what I liked most about this book is the description of the Paris lifestyle post WWI. What an interesting time! Sometimes the lifestyle and waste made me angry. Is it really necessary to partake of so much, especially alcohol and drugs, to be creative? I hope not. How much more might have been written, painted, composed without the excess?
Terry Fallis is a wonderful wordsmith. His descriptions are dead on: each paints a vivid picture of its subject. The situations are laugh-out-loud funny. "Sure I will put my name up for the election but I do not want to be elected." When The Best Laid Plans go awry, our hero steps up and become the ideal politician. Lovely, funny book in which one learns quite a bit about the Canadian Political System.
This author is wonderful. Her 'word smithing' is purely amazing. This talent mixed with the story of a nunnery in the Middle Ages makes for a great read. One learns much about the lot of women at that time and how these women provided support for each other. Dunant has researched her topic exhaustively. Her backgrounds are described with detail: her characters are wide ranging and interesting. .They come to life through their interaction with each other. The story itself is a page turner. This was a wonderful book.
