My Reviews
Erik Larson does a superb job of research and writing in this difficult non-fiction book. The book is difficult because of the subject matter -- Hitler's rise in Germany -- as well as due to the foreign names and political rigamarole that is frustrating.
This book was well-written and informative without giving grim details. It was eye-opening for all of us in our club -- we had no idea this went on to the extent that it does, and even in our own country. Great book for a discussion!
Fascinating book, well-written and easy to read, although full of history and politics. Eye-opening! Only talks about the presidents since Hoover, so most of us can remember most of them, and therefore it holds your interest more than if it discussed presidents of 100 years ago.
All of our club members enjoyed this book, which also provided interesting material for discussion. It is the story of an 11 year old boy whose mom put him on a bus to travel cross country, alone. He is befriended by an ex-con who watches out for him and teaches him how to become a man. We learn that anything is possible and not to judge people by our biases.
23 members met to discuss this book, and no one liked it! Characters were not developed. There was a lot of flashback but the reader got confused about whether the event they were reading about was in the past or present. There were unexplained events in the action that made no sense. One of the worst books I've ever read.
Set in Biblical times, and reminiscent of The Red Tent, this is a well-written, informative, and interesting account of the time of Abraham and Lot.
It's not the destination, it's the journey. This book can be enjoyed on two levels -- on the face of it, it's a sad/funny story of a quirky man who is walking to save the life of a woman he hasn't seen in 20 years. On a deeper level, it's a journey of self discovery for Harold and his wife, as they come to terms with the past, their lives, their failings, their humanness.
The descriptions above don't fit this book. It was well-written and had excellent character development. Our club really enjoyed it, and it provided for a lively discussion. Sad and funny. A favorite.
