My Reviews
I really enjoyed this book! This story is told not just from the patient's perspective but you get a feel for what the family, friends and doctors of the patient experience as well. I went through a variety of emotions as I progressed through the book. I laughed more than I thought that I would and cried as much as expected. I felt anger/frustration at Alice and her family in the beginning. But then began to understand and relate to them more as the book went on. This story made me look at this disease in a whole new way. Having a family member recently diagnosed; this book gave me lots to think about. I strongly suggest this book!
Nicholas Sparks offers a very realistic view into the mind of a teenage girl. At the beginning of the story it is really hard to like Roni. She is so angry and bitter. Eventually, you watch as she transforms into a mature adult that can see all sides of situations. You learn along with her that certain events in her life are not as they seem and she has been very wrong in placing blame. Ultimately the lesson learned is that things are not always "black and white" and that holding on to anger and bitterness hurts you more than anyone else.
In my opinion the characters were very hard to like. The two main characters were very bitter, arrogant, and self-centered. At times I wondered if the characters were so very condescending because that was they way the author wanted them to appear or if it was because the author's own attitude and personality were slipping through. I'm sure there were some very insightful thoughts and ideas presented in the story but I just couldn't move beyond the irritating attitudes of the characters. I found that their negativity was contagious while I was reading. I'm sure that my little feeble mind missed the profound message being conveyed. I still recommend this book for other book clubs. It definitely provides the opportunity for lots of discussion. I personally couldn't wait to hear the different perspectives and thoughts on the characters and the story in general.
I really enjoyed this story. I began reading it to determine if it was appropriate for my daughter to read and was quickly hooked. The characters are very entertaining. There is just the right mix of suspense, humor, action, and romance. I will warn you that the book ends with a "cliff-hanger" and you will want to jump right in to the next book (City of Ashes) to find out how things turn out. However, I don't feel that it would be appropriate for an adult book club pick. A teen book club would probably have lots to discuss though.
This was a very good book. The writing was wonderful. I quickly became invested in the characters and I felt their successes and failures as if they were my own. There were some very predictable moments but just enough twists and turns to keep me guessing.
I loved this book!! It had been recommended to me by a friend and then our Book Club chose it for our September read. I thought that it might be okay but wasn't overly excited about starting it. However, once I began reading I could not stop!! This story was so much better than I had thought it would be. I ended up reading the entire book in two evenings. I have to admit that there were some loose ends that I would LOVE to know what happened (sequel maybe???). It was really a great read. I laughed, cried and even cringed (quite a bit) over the situations and interactions between the characters. Minny was my favorite. I looked forward to her chapters because I never knew what she was going to be up to next! I very much recommend this book!!!!
