The Host: A Novel by Stephenie Meyer

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Initially, The Host doesn’t seem at all interesting to me; I believe a feeling of utter disappointment best described my feeling at the time. The main character, Wanderer, was dull and I was waiting for the voice in her head Melanie would take over, in hind sight I find this extremely hilarious. When Melanie leads Wanderer into the desert my interest begins to peak. I wanted to be lead to this promise of love (Jared) and strong family connection (Jamie).
This novel took a turn when I was lead into the underground caverns with a society of human survivors. I became bonded and protective of Wanderer and found the strong Melanie very bland. The relationship created with this “parasite” is surprising and endearing.
Although the author‘s story is slow coming it is not disappointing. It was actually very entertaining.

Boring, Inspiring, Slow
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

I was excited about reading this novel for the book club considering the positive recommendations personally given to me and the general “hype” through media. I did not personally connect with the author and found her journey difficult to follow. Although her writing was easy to follow her content did not impress me. I did immensely enjoy her mouth watering description of the food in Italy and the general culture. (I almost peed myself when she described the dialogue of the old man at the soccer game.) However beyond Italy I could barely read on.

I cannot recommend this book for it did not enjoy it, the writing was good but the journey was lacking.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

This is a very cleverly written novel, I was amazed with the time line of this novel it was brilliant. The novel could be classified as science fiction for its intriguing paranormal aspect of time travel; Henry’s disorder or a romance for its realistic portrayal of an intimate bond between people. I loved the switch of narration between characters giving you an honest look into the character’s views and lives.

I would highly recommend this fascinating book for its emotional connection and clever writing.
